What is Sedation Dentistry, and what can it do for me?
|
Dentistry has so many advances to offer today. These advances can be life changing, but only if you actually go to the dentist.
People stay away for a variety of reasons. In fact, it’s been estimated that 50% of the population is either terrified, or at least uncomfortable, when a visit to the dentist is needed. So, they live in pain and never smile in public. These people lose their ability to chew properly, have dark stained teeth, develop gum disease, have fractured and/or missing teeth, have associated diabetes, and heart disease. |
You need to know now that dentistry does not have to be scary anymore. Sedation dentistry enables anxiety-free dental procedures to be performed during which you are calm, relaxed, comfortable, and alert. The nightmare is over.
Sedation dentistry is a technique and art that requires extensive training and experience. Stony Hill Dental Care is a Fellow of the Dental Organization for Conscious Sedation which is indicative of his training. We are also a Master of the Academy of General Dentistry with forty plus years of experience. This means that you can rest assured that your sedation dentistry experience will be a pleasant one, under the supervision of a true expert in the field.
Nobody enjoys multiple visits to the dentist to finish a single procedure. This only increases patient fear and anxiety. Using the latest sedation dentistry technology, Stony Hill Dental Care can usually complete your procedure in one visit. With one-visit dentistry, we try to ease your anxiety and make your dentist visit as comfortable as possible.

Am I a Candidate for Sedation Dentistry?
Not everyone is a candidate. It depends on the severity of your conditions and the medications you are currently taking. Most patients are excellent candidates and less than 10% are not.
Will It Hurt?
The sedation visit is a very relaxing one. Under no conditions will any dentistry be done until the patient is completely at ease and numb.
Why Are So Many People Afraid of the Dentist?
No one knows for sure. The same question can be asked when people fear snakes or flying across the country. It is an innate fear that up until now could not be dealt with adequately. It takes special training to treat fearful patients. Words alone are not enough. Stony Hill Dental Care has the experience and knowledge to help you.
Levels of Sedation Dentistry
Nitrous Oxide Sedation
Nitrous oxide is a very light form of sedation that is administered by inhalation. It takes effect rather quickly and wears off just as quickly. It may be sufficient for some people, but not for the vast majority of fearful patients. It is best used for short visits when minor procedures are completed. It’s all we had for quite some time, until now.
Oral Conscious Sedation
Oral conscious sedation is for patients who need more than just nitrous oxide to be comfortably sedated. It works quite well for busy people who want everything done as quickly as possible. It is designed for long appointments and where two or more appointments are combined. It is administered with medications taken by mouth the night before, and one hour before the appointment. Any medication prescribed are geared to the individual’s health history. Most patients have little or no memory of their visit 24 hours later, even though they were somewhat alert during their treatment.
