You might have heard your dentist mention that you need a dental crown, but what exactly does that mean? Sometimes called a dental cap, a crown is essentially a tooth-shaped cover that fits over your entire tooth to restore its shape, size, strength, and appearance. At Stony Hill Dental Care, Dr. Walter Kostrzewski and our team want you to understand when crowns are necessary and what to expect from the process.

What Is a Dental Crown?

Think of a dental crown as a protective helmet for your tooth. It’s custom-made to match the color and shape of your natural teeth, covering everything from the gum line up. Crowns can be made from various materials, including porcelain, ceramic, metal alloys, or a combination of materials, depending on which tooth needs treatment and your specific needs.

When Do You Need a Crown?

Several situations might lead Dr. Kostrzewski to recommend a dental crown for your tooth:

Severe Tooth Decay

When a cavity is too large for a filling to effectively restore the tooth’s structure, a crown becomes necessary. The crown protects what remains of your natural tooth while restoring full function.

Cracked or Broken Teeth

Teeth can crack or break from trauma, grinding, or biting down on something hard. A dental cap holds the damaged pieces together and prevents further deterioration.

After Root Canal Treatment

Root canal therapy often leaves teeth weakened and more susceptible to breaking. A crown provides the strength and protection needed to keep the tooth functional for years to come.

Worn Down Teeth

Chronic teeth grinding or acid erosion can wear teeth down significantly. Crowns restore proper tooth height and biting function.

Cosmetic Improvements

Sometimes crowns serve aesthetic purposes, covering severely discolored or misshapen teeth that don’t respond well to other cosmetic treatments.

Supporting Dental Bridges

Crowns anchor dental bridges by capping the teeth on either side of a gap.

Understanding the Tooth Crown Procedure

The tooth crown procedure typically requires two visits to our Bethel office. During your first appointment, Dr. Kostrzewski will prepare your tooth by removing any decay and shaping it to accommodate the crown. We’ll take detailed impressions of your prepared tooth and surrounding teeth to ensure your crown fits perfectly.

You’ll receive a temporary crown to protect your tooth while our dental lab creates your permanent restoration. This process usually takes about two weeks.

At your second visit, we’ll remove the temporary crown and check the fit and appearance of your permanent one. Once you and Dr. Kostrzewski are satisfied with how it looks and feels, we’ll cement it securely in place.

How Long Do Crowns Last?

With proper care, dental crowns typically last between 10 and 15 years, though many last even longer. Maintaining good oral hygiene, avoiding chewing hard objects, and keeping up with regular dental checkups will help maximize your crown’s lifespan.
